ELL self-assessment


·          I make connections between a text and my own experiences.
·         I use what I already know to help me understand what I read.
·         I support my opinions with specific connections to the text.
·         I explain why parts of a text are facts or opinions.


·         When I read aloud I pronounce the words correctly.
·         When I read aloud I read smoothly and use expression that fits what is happening in the story.
·         I pay attention to punctuation; I read and do what it signals me to do.
·         I adjust how I read so it sounds right and I can understand the meaning.


·         I use information in the text to understand what is not explained and to support my ideas.

·         I use what characters do and say to understand and explain their thoughts and feelings.

·         I use clues in the text to draw conclusions about what the writer doesn’t explain.

·         I figure out and effect relationships the writer doesn’t explain.

·         I summarize important information after I read a text or part of a text.
·         I think about whether I understand what I am reading and use strategies when I am confused.

Four ways to conference with a partner.

·         You read aloud-your partner listens.
·         You read aloud-your partner listens and reads along silently.
·         Your partner reads silently.

·         Your partner reads your writing aloud-you listen.


·         Listen politely to your partner’s suggestions

·         Make notes of suggestions you want to remember.

·         Ask questions. What do you want comments about?

·         Thank your partner for helping.


·         Be honest and kind.

·         Say what you really think and sat it politely.

·         Ask questions if something isn’t clear.

·         Tell what parts you especially liked.

·         Give suggestions for making the writing better.

  1. Oksana, I liked the idea described above - different types of text comprehension being explained in detail. Meanwhile, perhaps, the person who compiled those valuable thoeghts (not you?) missed some spelling mistakes which sometimes affect the right understanding of ideas conveyed.
    The biggest plus is that your blog encourages the other colleagues and I'd preferred you could have shared about its existence during our previous visit to your school)))

  2. Tatiana, thanks for the visit .You and colleagues are always welcome to our school.
    Together with my senior learners we tried to adapt the hints mentioned above to our classroom and they worked well. We will think about spelling mistakes and I hope to share the ideas later.
